I really 'got' your ideas, thank you so much for sharing them.

I had post-natal depression after both my kids and never fully shook it off. Every now and again I can feel it returning. Last week was one of those times and I recognised it and did something about it. Instead of housework, studying or whatever I went out, bought a couple of books and then did some college reading in a Pizza Hut while treating myself to lunch. I felt so much better by the end of the day!

I am trying to do the same as you do - improve myself everyday - systematically. I did a spreadsheet in google spreadsheets and check every day if I fulfilled some of my promises. I wrote 15 things to work on. And I need to work on them for 35 days in a raw, without interruption. Than I exchange for another thing. Hopefully this will work. I think that this could be a good experience. I think that the most depressing in our life are our bad habits that are sabotaging it.
The sequence of my actions is like that:
1. Belief in the importance of doing something that will improve you and your life.
2. Appears interest to do that thing.
3. Than you are actually doing thing.
4. Than you are experiencing good result.
5. The belief of doing good things is strengthening.
Creating the positive circle that will roll a wheel of change.

Steve,

RIGHT ON!!

I have written that success is achieved through Education, Setting Goals and Taking Action. But of the three, I think that Action is the most important.

If you Act without the appropriate knowledge (Education), you will quickly figure out what you need to know and can go learn it.

If you Act without having an end goal, one will eventually emerge as you keep moving forward.

If, however, you know everything you need to know to achieve the most precise of goals but do nothing; all you will have is a head full of information and a bunch of unfulfilled dreams.

To get moving will be the hardest thing you have ever done. I know because it was when I decided to lose 40 lbs on December 1, 2006.

But I promise you this. Once you get going it will be like running down hill. It’s not always comfortable but it’s easier than stopping. As of today, I have lost 20 lbs, can’t remember the bad days and look forward to the rest of the trip.

I don't hate my live but I know exactly what you're talking about. It's easy to get stuck in a negative catch 22 situation. It happens to me at work all the time. I really like what I do, except it's meaningless, but I do need a break. Parental leave is now a good idea since my daughter is 7 months and more receptible to stuff except breast-feeding:-)) I'm planning on many months of parental leave this year to reflect on things and spend time with my kids.

Steve, this was a beauty.

A really honest display of a week shot to bits. I really felt for you - it sounded like agony. "You still love me even when you hurt me, right dad?" Oh man, it would take a sturdy spirit not to be knocked sideways by that one.

You rallied - and now you have shared your experience, and I, for one, am immensely grateful. Those last four points are killer points.

Thanks, again.

Steve, the formula you prescribe is extremely useful. I feel that one of the most difficult things to do in life is item #1; recognizing when you're trapped in a negative emotional state. It's these times when you begin feeling as if the world is out to get you and everything that can go wrong is happening to you at the moment. One thing I've found to be very helpful is to have some source of inspiration close at hand for moments just like this whether it's a favorite movie, book, blog post, song, et cetera... something that can help snap you out of it and start you on the path to changing your state of being.
